Radiation? Little to zero!

8. January 2019 Published by Raphael Doerr

We really don’t want to bore you with technical things. Because we know that you mainly like our products because they work so easily. But we’re especially proud of one technical aspect: ECO DECT. This technology makes our cordless phones particularly power-saving and low in radiation – and completely radiation-free in standby mode. We’d be pleased to explain how and why that’s important for us.

A short bit of background information: We regard the DECT standard as a genuine hidden champion. The reason we’re so proud of it is probably that we’ve played a major role in developing and enhancing it over decades. In a nutshell: The DECT standard is an extremely reliable, secure and proprietary wireless interface between phones and other devices and boasts a very large range: 60 meters indoors and 300 meters outdoors. Most of the time, however, you don’t need that much.

Because so much power is not necessary during permanent operation, we’ve developed ECO DECT mode. When this is activated in the handset menu, the transmission power of the base station and handset is reduced from 100 to 20 percent. That halves the devices’ range, but is still completely sufficient for most situations at home. But the advantages are far greater: less radiation when no calls are made, less power consumption, yet the same crystal-clear voice quality.

Sleep, telephone, sleep

We’ve also improved ECO DECT mode over time. In ECO Plus mode, the link between the handset and base station in standby (whenever no calls are made) is turned off entirely. Both devices switch to a “listen” mode. They wait for an event to wake them up and resume an active connection: If a call comes in, the base activates transmission, the handset synchronizes with the base, rings and displays the name of the caller. By the same token, the handset activates the base at the touch of a button. It takes less than a second and the user doesn’t even notice it. In other words, base and handset only transmit when there’s an actual call.

The closer it is, the lower the transmission power

Whether ECO DECT or activated ECO Plus mode – all handsets also reduce their transmission power automatically depending on their distance from the base: For example, 15 percent is sufficient for a distance of eight meters. This significantly increases the standby time of the handsets. The energy-efficient power supply units of the ECO DECT phones from Gigaset also lower energy consumption by 60 percent.
So why all the effort? Because we want to do our bit for the environment and sustainability with our products. We’ve improved a lot of details of our products over the years – from smaller packaging to cut CO2 emissions to developments such as ECO DECT which reduce radiation in the home and help save power. And because the issue is so important for us, all out phones are equipped with ECO DECT technology – from the low-cost Gigaset A415 at €29.99 (RRP) to the flagship Gigaset SL450 with a full aluminum body at €149.99 (RRP).
